Exploring emotion through figurative art

Using my own unique visual language, my work can be really emotional and tell intricate stories.

The movement and energy of my poses and the elements of line, shape and colour help inform my work; even without detail in the faces of my figures, you can see a wide range of emotions unfold.

My minimalist brushstrokes give just enough information to the viewer to convey the scene. Questions that challenge the viewer include:

  1. Who is the figure?

  2. What’s the scene?

  3. How do they feel?

  4. How does it make you, as the viewer, feel?

My pared back compositions are filled with openness to create a hint of a scene, and allow the viewer to imprint their own emotions onto the painting. My colour palettes are chosen to be bold yet understated, and complement your interior without overpowering it.

To awaken human emotion is the highest level of art.

Tips for figurative artists to bring emotion to your work:

1) Channel your emotions into your work. Let your mood guide you.

2) Stand while you paint, and listen to music to inspire and guide you.

3) Don’t be afraid to open yourself up in your work.
