How to buy art when you're just starting your collection

So…where do you start when you want to purchase a piece of art? It could be your first original or maybe you’re adding to a growing collection.

Either way, have some fun in the process! This blog post is an attempt to give you some pointers, although is not a comprehensive guide for collectors or people looking for an investment.

It’s a good idea to not only look online but to attend fairs, exhibitions and shows to pick up some gems from artists who may just be starting out.

My top tips for buying a piece of original art:

1) Fall in love with it first. If you see something that you instantly connect with, in my experience you should definitely go for it - you’re not likely to change your mind. Which brings me to…

2) Decide if you can afford it, and always put the cost into context; think about how much you’d spend on a night out or a new outfit, and realise that you’re going to be looking at your new piece every day - so think of its intrinsic value. Also, ask if a payment plan is an option…the worst they can say is no!

3) Decide on an original or print. If you can’t afford the original, consider getting a signed print from the artist. At least you’ll have a piece of theirs until the day comes when you can buy one of their originals. Fingers crossed one day you can!

4) See how it will look in situ. Ask the artist if they can show you how the piece will look in your home. Send them a pic of your space and they should be able to add the piece into the frame, giving you instant inspiration and an understanding of how it will fit.

5) Feel free to ask the artist about framing or hanging advice, they should be able to guide you.

Lastly, once you’ve taken the plunge and bought your new piece of art, don’t forget to send the artist an in situ shot once you’ve received it and leave them feedback or send them a testimonial. It means the world to any artist to see their work in new surroundings!
